Motivation Monday - Pick on Someone Bigger than You

I’m doing something new on the blog. Every Monday I’ll have a motivational and informative post on entrepreneurship. For the first few weeks, I’ll give you my spin on Richard Branson’s business theory. If you’ve read a few books about him then you might recognize some of these posts as a summary of his style. Enjoy!

Pick on Someone Bigger than you.

Make business a crusade. You can gain the moral ground this way against a larger competitor. Think about what Pepperjam is doing right now against Commission Junction. Kris Jones has been on every blog that has mentioned the story (including 11|15 Media) to say his side. We hear nothing from CJ which could make it worse for them in the long run.

Raise a pirate flag. If you can’t be a crusader, be a pirate. You can combine a lack of respect for authority (think Virgin Airlines vs British Airways), a sense of fun and adventure, and the pleasure of knowing you are a thorn in the side of big business. Everyone roots for Captain Jack Sparrow!

Everyone loves an underdog. It’s hard to root against the little guy going against the giant because he believes he is in the right. How many kids became NY Giants fans from the Superbowl? The Manning jersey became the hottest item in the country.

Pick your fights. Don’t fight a Goliath just because it’s there. Fight because you’ve been wronged or you see an opportunity that strategically places your business in a favorable position.

Guerrilla tactics against a larger opponent work. Most companies do not blog. If you keep the communication open between your business and their customers, you will gain ground on them before they are even aware of you.

Happy Monday!
